2016 Campaign: Words of Wisdom

Here at Schooner Estates, our Residents have lived full and fascinating lives. You’ve lived through good times and bad, prosperity and need, love and loss. You’ve seen wars, progress, invention, and political upheaval. You’ve seen all the things that have changed this world of ours, and what’s more, you’ve seen all constants that have endured. What you’ve gained through all this is something invaluable: your unique and experienced perspective.

This year, Schooner Estates would like to continue the trend of focusing our marketing and awareness efforts on you, our amazing residents. We’re hoping that you will share your words of wisdom with us so that we can, in turn, share them with others: here in the flash, on our Facebook page, maybe even in the Newspaper and beyond!

We will be hosting a video and photo shoot on Wednesday, January 13th at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Castine Living Room. We hope you’ll come by and tell us what it is you’ve learned in life that you hope other people can benefit from knowing.  We can’t wait to hear your words of wisdom!

Linda Hildonen

Robin Dow 2016 Kick-Off Meeting

The Robin Dow Senior Citizens Club will resume meetings in the Tenants Harbor Room on January 13th and will still be held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. This meeting brings together seniors from the local area. Living here at Schooner, you have the advantage of not having to go out on cold winter days.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for socializing with free fresh brewed coffee and sale of raffle tickets to members only, prior to the 11:30 a.m. meeting. You are invited to attend as a guest. Members enjoy many scheduled activities such as birthday celebrations. Stop by and enjoy some time with the group. They look forward to seeing you!

Piano Player Extraordinaire!

World renowned concert pianist Frederick Moyer will deliver a concert performance for us on Wednesday, January 27th at 4:00 p.m. in our Camden Living Room. He has appeared as piano soloist with most of the major orchestras of the United States as well as many in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia. Don’t miss this concert!

And the Award Goes To…

Congratulation’s goes out to our own Tonie Ramsey. On December 3rd, at the Lewiston Ramada Inn, she and two other women were presented with the inaugural Women of Achievement Award for the YWCA of Central Maine. This prestigious award, the first established by the YWCA to recognize women’s contributions in our community, recognizes women who have made extraordinary accomplishments through community service and dedication to the YWCA mission.

“The Tonie Ramsey Service Award”, was inspired by decades of volunteerism and service to boards of directors, including Central Maine Medical Center’s Bennett Breast Care Center, the Woman’s Literary Union, the Auburn Public Library, the Sarah Frye Home, Androscoggin County United Way and the Women’s Hospital Association.

Mardi Gras 2016

Dust off your beads, try on your mask and get ready for Mardi Gras 2016, right here at Schooner! This year’s date is Tuesday, February 9th and we are counting down the days already, planning for it’s early February arrival. Over the years it has become an annual event here at Schooner. During the month of January, you will be receiving information regarding guest sign up and buffet seating times.

Year in Review

This January marks my one-year anniversary of working for Schooner Estates as the Director of Marketing and Community Relations, and it’s been a wonderful year.  While my job can keep me very busy at times, I’ve never felt that I have to work hard to convince people to live here. That’s because there’s something you can feel when you walk through the door here at Schooner for the first time. I remember my first visit, back in December of 2014. When I walked in the main entrance, I could feel it.

What is “it,” you ask? “It” is the positive and caring feeling of a happy community. “It” is staff members that greet you with a smile, tenants that love where they live, and families that trust us, and love coming here to visit their loved ones.  “It” is the quality that everyone should look for in a Senior Living Community, and, let me tell you, Schooner has plenty of “It”!

I’ve had the good fortune to manage, work at and visit many Senior Living Communities, and I can tell you first-hand that Schooner Estates is at the top of the list. I have never felt so close to tenants: when I have a stressful moment in my day, I only need to look up and see Wilhelmina, Cornelia, Sue or Mark walking by with a big smile and a cheerful “hello” to make me feel at ease once again. So many of our tenants are invested in the success of our community, and stop by to share their thoughts and ideas. It’s their caring, and the hard work of our excellent staff, that gives Schooner Estates the reputation of being unparalleled in quality in every level of care. I thank you all for being the reason we have “it.” You’re what “it” is all about!

David Cassidy

~ Our 2015 Awareness Campaign Comes to an End ~

As many of you know, in 2015 we did something new with our marketing at Schooner Estates: we launched the “Our Community is Your Community” awareness campaign. During this campaign, we featured Schooner Residents and Employees, highlighting their connection to the Lewiston-Auburn Community and beyond. Each month, we picked a resident or staff member to interview about their life, their connection to Lewiston-Auburn and surrounding communities, and their feelings about Schooner. From there, we created a print ad for the Sun Journal, and posted (or will post!) a companion video on YouTube. Below a list of who we featured:

January: Irving Grant  •  February: Tony Emmi  •  March: Dorothy Larrabee  •  April: Larry Fortier
•  May: Bob Pacios  •  June: Jan Elie  •  July: Martin and Phyllis Dow  •  August: The Labrie Sisters: Florence Raymond, Therese Deschenes and Irene Delorme  •  September: Barbara Howe  •  October: Carl Harrigan and Christopher Boivin  •  November: Ellen Magnussen  •  And Coming in December: John Orestis and Barbra Crowley!

You’ve probably seen the print ads in the paper, or posted on the wall near the side entrance to the kitchen. If you haven’t seen the videos yet, you can find the ones that have been posted so far on YouTube by searching for Schooner Estates, or “Like” Schooner Estates on Facebook to see them as they are posted. Also, we will be showing the ads on video in our Tenants Harbor Room on Tuesday, December 29th at 2:15 p.m. Be sure to stop by!

We send a heartfelt Thank You for everyone who participated, watched, and shared these spots. We hope to continue the tradition of involving you, our fabulous Schooner Residents, in our marketing, so be ready for 2016’s Campaign!

Veteran’s Day 2015

Veteran’s day is Wednesday, November 11th. This year, it has special significance, as 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, arguably the single most defining event of the twentieth century. This war, and the events surrounding it, shaped the lives of an entire generation, both here in the U.S. and abroad.

Over one hundred thousand Mainers served in World War II, including many of our Schooner Estates residents. We offer our thanks on this special anniversary Veteran’s day, and all throughout the year. Also, join our own Judy Kuhn in a Veteran’s Day sing-a-long in the Village Green at 10:30 a.m. on November 11th.

Now that Labor Day is over, it’s time to save the date for our Annual Craft Fair, to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 17th. It’s an exciting event that features the talents and wares handcrafted by our own residents and outside vendors alike. Tables will be set up in the Village Green and filled with many hand crafted items, all ready for a little early holiday shopping! We may still have a few tables left to rent, please check with Mark Prevost our Resident Services Director for more information. We invite everyone to attend. Our craft fair is open to the public.

100 YEARS YOUNG

Once again, Schooner had the honor of celebrating a birthday for a new Centenarian Club member. The first and only requirement of our Centenarian Club is: Live to 100. Barbara Trask, who resides in our assisted living studios, has reached this milestone age.

ACTIVITIES NEEDS YOUR HELP

Stop! Don’t throw away those old Christmas, birthday cards, etc. Our Village Green craft group is looking for donations of unwanted greeting cards in order to transform them into attractive “crafty” creations!

They are also collecting unwanted coupon inserts, from your weekend newspapers. The residents of Castine will be clipping them and making them accessible to staff as a thank you for all they do.

Please drop off these items to the reception desk. Thank you for participating – we certainly appreciate it!
