Honor flight Maine

Our veterans, to say that they deserve our utmost respect and honor is an understatement. In late August, a very special 3 day trip was planned by “Honor Flight Maine”, a non-profit organization dedicated to transporting as many United States military veterans as possible to see the memorials of the respective war they fought in Washington, D.C. at no cost to the veterans.  Two distinguished Schooner residents, Larry Fortier and Irving Grant took advantage of this wonderful opportunity and made the exciting trip to Washington, D.C.  They were part of a 56 person group that made the journey.  At least 22 were WWII Veterans, 3 Korean War Veterans and 2 Vietnam Veterans.  The remaining individuals were family and friends, known as Guardians.

The Schooner Flu Clinic will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday October 9th in the Castine Living Room.

Androscoggin Home Health will be here to give Schooner residents the shots.  You will be receiving a memo with details regarding sign up and times.

Life line screenings

Schooner Estates is pleased to once again host a preventive health event.  Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on Friday, October 10th, 2014.  Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete.  Memos have been distributed with complete sign up information and details.

Three Sisters under one roof

How wonderful is this? Three sisters have all made Schooner Estates their home.  Irene     Delorme (far right) and her sister Theresa Deschenes (middle) and their husbands lived across the street from each other in Auburn for 59 years. Their sister Florence Raymond also lived in Auburn with her husband and brought up five children in the family homestead where she was born. When Florence and Bert moved to Schooner recently, the three        sisters were     reunited and still all live in     Auburn. We are happy to have them here!

Entertainment Galore

Schooner Estates is a great place to live.  Our community offers its residents a wide variety of entertainment and socializing events to make each day fun filled and interesting.  Take a look below and you will see what I mean!

Schooner is proud to be hosting a Thursday afternoon performance of Russian pianist Ksenia Kostelanetz, on August 28th at 2:30 p.m.  Ksenia is thirteen years old.  She was born into a musical family of Russian Immigrants and  started her piano studies at the age of four. She is currently a student of Stephen Swedish and Frank Glazer.

On Thursday, July 10th we welcomed two    amazing classical pianists:

Mark Demidovich, a native of Kostroma,      Russia. He has been warmly received by Schooner Estates residents during the past two seasons.  And Vasily Panteleev, 24, from Ukraine, his first trip to Maine. Gifted in languages as well as in music.

Summer Health Tips

Preparation and moderation are the key  regarding enjoying time outdoors during the summer months.  By following some common sense tips, seniors can more fully enjoy the good summer weather and avoid over exposure to the sun and heat.

– – What’s The Hurry? — Summer should be enjoyed, so why rush? The faster you move the more your body heats, especially in warm weather.

Shade — Plan outdoor activities for cooler early morning hours. Look for shaded areas such as a covered porch or under a tree to enjoy an activity. Heat can impact seniors as easily indoors as it can outdoors, so be sure air conditioning is used. Lower shades to keep light and heat out.

A Need to Hydrate — Ice cream, popsicles and other frozen treats are refreshing on a warm day. Also, drink plenty of water, juice and sports drinks while avoiding caffeine.  Eat cool or cold foods such as sandwiches and salads.  Here at Schooner, check out our Brass Rail Café in the Village Green and the Camden coffee bar area —we have cool drinks available daily.

Stay hydrated and stay healthy!
