It is important to remember the true meaning of the holiday season. It should go without saying how important family is, especially during this time of year, but it might bear repeating why the family is so important both during the holidays and throughout the year. It is to be thankful for what you have. It is about giving back to those who make your life special. Here at Schooner Estates, we are all family, starting with our wonderful residents and caring staff. We share special moments such as our joyous holiday get-togethers and the warmth that the season brings. Our Schooner staff has a commitment to excellence 365 days a year and all are committed in keeping the following things in mind.

  • Speak to people, there is nothing as nice as a cheerful greeting or an act of kindness.
  • Call people by name, the sweetest music is to hear one’s name called.
  • Be cordial, speak and act as if everything you do is a pleasure.
  • Be alert to give service, what counts most in life is what we do for others; it makes you feel wonderful.
  • Be considerate of the feelings of others.
  • Be generous with praise; cautious with criticism.

TIME TO TRAVEL

At Schooner, we have dedicated ourselves to our philosophy: to provide the opportunity to experience a gracious lifestyle for those who desire continued independence through active retirement, to present friendship and a feeling of belonging to a caring and interesting community.  To help fulfill this commitment, we provide wonderful events and day and overnight excursions, giving all who live here the opportunity to be active and enjoy life.  For your “viewing” enjoyment, here are a few photos, including our Fashion Show, Rangeley and Bar Harbor trips.

SAM THE CAT

We all know him as “Sam the Maintenance Cat” –  he can be seen, every now and then, walking about on the Schooner grounds.  Sam is a stray cat, adopted and taken care of through caring donations from residents and employees.  In order to help him through another winter, Holiday themed coasters, specially made by Schooner Residential Care resident Bob Dunham, are being sold in the display case, located in the Village Green.  We are hoping to purchase a comfy “Igloo shelter” for Sam.  The coasters are being sold – 4 for $10.00.  Also, special orders for coasters can be taken.

Thank you everyone for your support!

MONTHLY GIVE BACK

For the month of October, “The Root Cellar”, in Lewiston, was the destination for our monthly “Give Back” program.  The Root Cellar was established in 1984 in a dirt floor church basement in Portland, Maine. Recognizing the need for a place where teens could come as an alternative to the streets, and in some cases their homes, a handful of volunteers provided a positive place where teens could drop in.

After almost 30 years of hard work and determination, The Root Cellar is still as committed as ever to serving and loving our neighbors, especially the youth.
