At Schooner, we have dedicated ourselves to our philosophy: to provide the opportunity to experience a gracious lifestyle for those who desire continued independence through active retirement, to present friendship and a feeling of belonging to a caring and interesting community.  To help fulfill this commitment, we provide wonderful events and day and overnight excursions, giving all who live here the opportunity to be active and enjoy life.  For your “viewing” enjoyment, here are a few photos, including our Fashion Show, Rangeley and Bar Harbor trips.

We all know him as “Sam the Maintenance Cat” –  he can be seen, every now and then, walking about on the Schooner grounds.  Sam is a stray cat, adopted and taken care of through caring donations from residents and employees.  In order to help him through another winter, Holiday themed coasters, specially made by Schooner Residential Care resident Bob Dunham, are being sold in the display case, located in the Village Green.  We are hoping to purchase a comfy “Igloo shelter” for Sam.  The coasters are being sold – 4 for $10.00.  Also, special orders for coasters can be taken.

Thank you everyone for your support!

For the month of October, “The Root Cellar”, in Lewiston, was the destination for our monthly “Give Back” program.  The Root Cellar was established in 1984 in a dirt floor church basement in Portland, Maine. Recognizing the need for a place where teens could come as an alternative to the streets, and in some cases their homes, a handful of volunteers provided a positive place where teens could drop in.

After almost 30 years of hard work and determination, The Root Cellar is still as committed as ever to serving and loving our neighbors, especially the youth.

The holiday season is slowly sneaking up on us. Next month we celebrate Thanksgiving! Here at Schooner we are delighted to provide our residents with the traditional quintessential Thanksgiving dishes. Take a look at the fabulous feast we have in store for you this year!

Awards for years of service and performance were presented … Kudos to all for another great year!  All employees received years of service pins along with a spectacular Schooner jacket. September is slowly creeping up on us, and before we know it, we will be picking apples, buying pumpkins and pulling out all of our Fall decorations from years past. Wednesday, September 18th is the scheduled date for our final barbecue of the season. In cele-bration of Maine’s September and October harvest time, our barbecue theme has been titled “Country Farm Harvest Buffet”. So dust off your straw hats and flannel shirts and dress for the occasion! We would be happy to have your friends and family in attendance, to celebrate the day with you. Tickets are available at the front desk for $14.00. Copies of the barbecue menu will be available soon, check at the front desk for a copy.

The first annual “Maine Seniors Day” has been signed in to law and will take place this year on Saturday, September 14, 2013. “This is a great opportunity to show all seniors our appreciation for their service and contributions to the state of Maine. Maine Seniors Day serves as much more than just a symbol. Having an official day gives everyone of us the opportunity to recognize their achievements and raise awareness about the issues they face”, a note from David Nealley, publisher of Maine Seniors Magazine. In celebration of the day, Schooner will be distributing carnations to all of their residents.

In continuation of Schooner’s 25th Anniversary celebration of community “Give Backs”, we are proud to have donated a check in the amount of $500.00 to the “Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services”.

This essential organization serves the Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.

Schooner is proud to be assembling a team this year to participate in the AHA, 2013 Central Maine Heart Walk. This special event will be held on Sunday, September 15th at 9:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn. The events of the day include a slow paced 1-mile walk, a 5K walk or fun run. Healthy food, health screenings, music and activities will also be in abundance! Give the Schooner front desk a call to sign up. It is that time of year when we all start to think about switching from summer to Fall attire. Speaking of attire, Schooner has an upcoming Fashion Show scheduled for Saturday, October 5th, complete with an Emcee! The talent search is pretty much complete and fifteen models will be wearing outfits from the popular Christopher and Banks clothing store. You will be entertained with music and served light foods and refreshments. A special drawing for a gift basket will be available. Hope to see you on the runway! More information to follow next month.

Our August barbecue has come and gone, and it went off without a hitch. The weather was great and we had a perfect location, right next to our beautiful Residential Care patio.
